More about the Diet
The Fast-5 Diet works by allowing the body to restore its natural energy-balance system. The system allowed thousands of generations of humans to survive when every day was a struggle to find food. The system collects and stores energy as fat. Fat is nature's refrigerator. Food stored as fat is protected from consumption by the insects, animals, and bacteria that would consume it if it were left in the environment. The system is so effective that a human can routinely survive for days to weeks without food.

In our developed culture, there is no challenge to survive and energy use is very low compared to days spent farming or hunting and gathering. The body's frugal energy balance system is overwhelmed by excess food (fuel). In many people, fat has become their largest organ, and for some, the fat outweighs the entire non-fat body weight. If a typical car carried this much fuel, its tank would hold 500 gallons (1890 liters) of fuel.

The Fast-5 diet restores the balance in a comfortable, sustainable way.

Now
Labor Most jobs require day-long labor expenditure. Meals require hours of time investment for acquisition and preparation. An increasing number of jobs are sedentary. Homemaking chores are machine-assisted. Meals require minimal preparation effort and time.
Immunity Energy is spent fighting all infections, and infections often kill. Major bacterial infections (cholera, typhus, tuberculosis) and energy-diverting parasitic infestations (tapeworm, roundworm) are common. Some infections are prevented by immunization; others are managed by antibiotics. Infection rarely overwhelms a human unless aged or injured.
Thermostasis

The body uses energy to cool or warm itself to maintain the core temperature needed to function.

Large amount of energy spent on body heating by shivering (thermogenesis) and cooling (sweating) to maintain normal temperature. Insulated shelter, air conditioning, and heating make thermostasis a low-energy demand; shivering and sweating are relatively rare.
Transportation Most people walk to their destinations. Exposure to elements is a part of most travel. Cross-country travel is rare. People drive virtually everywhere; walking more than 1/10 mile is rare unless performed as part of deliberate exercise.
Summary Until about 50 years ago, a great deal of energy was spent by every human body on the basic needs of living. Maintaining body temperature and the acquisition and preparation of food took substantial time and energy. In current times, very little energy is spent on survival needs and maintenance. Food is widely available with zero energy cost to acquire it.
