Judi's Trek Blog

November 4, 2006

Our room was like a sauna last night. Mom was toasty warm and I was too. It was quiet and my bed was very comfortable. I slept well and awakened refreshed. I completed my morning routine then went down to get Mom and me a cup of coffee. Mom and I completed our morning preparation then Mom went to pick up Gary. Gary and Mom returned to the Motel and I joined them to drive to our starting place about 15 miles east of Weatherford. The walk was challenging today for a number of reasons. It was windy, there was rarely a shoulder on the road and following Old Rte 66 was occasionally challenging because of minimal signage. I found that in general if I followed the instinctive direction of the road it worked. I encountered more than a few dogs. All of the dogs turned out to be friendly, but it wasn’t clear at first.
I took advantage of the weekend minutes on my cell service and caught up with a number of friends. That passes the time nicely.

The terrain was notable for variety. A few places had deep gulleys with a bridge crossing them and steep, if short, cliff areas. There were hills and flat areas. I recalled a preconceived impression I had before I participated in an annual bicycle ride across Iowa.

Iowa is generally considered to be flat, but from the perspective of a bicycle seat, there are some real hills. I had a similar impression today. Oklahoma may generally be flat, but there are a number of significant exceptions very evident on foot.

I walked to the Cherokee Trading Post and stopped in to use the facilities and to browse the gift options. It provided a brief distraction then I moved on. I encountered a number of cows. As usual, they stopped and looked in my direction. I think they expect to be fed and I always feel a little uncomfortable creating an expectation that I am not going to meet. I did actually talk out loud to them this time and offered my apologies for not giving them hay or grain. I told them that the Fast-5 lifestyle really was to their advantage. I had to laugh at my choice to speak out loud to the cows.

The birds were vocal throughout much of today’s walk. I told my Mom last night that there are times when the walk is genuinely enjoyable. I try to remind myself that it is a privilege to walk through nature with permission to linger if the view warrants it. I walked 30 miles stopping in El Reno. Mom picked me up then we went to the American Legion to ask about RV Parks. A man named Mark led us to Lake El Reno where the city has an RV Park for $10 per night. That was a bargain. We were happy to find the good value. It was a nice park with a number of hiking trails. Some kids (with adult supervision) were there riding dirt bikes. They were dressed in very bright clothes and it looked like they were learning the sport.

Mom and went to the historic downtown area of El Reno. All of the shops were closed, but the town was an interesting place to explore. We lingered only briefly then returned to our campsite. Mom called Gary to get an update on his progress. He told Mom he was going to stay the night in a motel in Hinton and would walk from there in the morning to the place where we stop our walk tomorrow. He said he’d talk with Mom in the morning to finalize the logistics.

I talked with Bert. Mom talked with Dad. That routine was intact. Mom talked with Cheryl to catch up and see how her week had been. Mom and I talked about the events of the day and discussed a strategy for the next day. We discussed the mission and timelines and strategies for success. We committed that we will do what it takes to meet the goals we have set and to help Gary meet his goals.
Rest is key as we work to offer our best to those who are to hear our message. We will continue tomorrow to teach the nation about the benefits of the Fast-5 short term, fasting lifestyle.
