I drove away from Jacksonville pulling a pop-up trailer behind our Volvo. Bert followed behind me to monitor my progress as I became more comfortable pulling the camper. We did some distance exercises with his car and my mirrors to let me get accustomed to negotiating traffic safely. About 30 miles down the road in McClenny, I discovered that I left one box of trip essentials at home. Bert returned to retrieve the box while I took the opportunity to have a “date” with our youngest daughter. She had been riding with Bert. We had a great time until Bert and my oldest daughter returned with the box. Timing required that Bert pick up our oldest daughter from school before returning to McClenny. It was a stuttering start, but all was well. I was happy to have some special time with the kids before leaving. I drove to Hartford, Alabama to spend the night at my parents’ home and to finish packing the camper. My Mom, Mary Herring was joining me on the journey to drive a support car with water. She is a seasoned “RV-er,” so her experience in preparing for this sort of trip was phenomenal. The visit with my parents was very warm and their enthusiasm for the importance of this journey was inspiring. |
